Alebrije - Fishing Giraffe on chair

Mexican alebrijes are intricate wooden sculptures painted with vibrant designs, originating from the Mexico City neighborhood of La Merced in the 1930s. They hold cultural significance, reflecting the strong indigenous heritage in Oaxaca through diverse motifs and designs inspired by Zapotec and Mixtec cultures. This art showcases the creativity and skill of artisans, while preserving Oaxaca's rich and diverse cultural traditions.

Martin Melchor, of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca, Mexico created this whimsical giraffe enjoying a day at the river fishing!  

The giraffe come off his chair.  The piece measures 12 in to the top of the pole, 7.5 in deep, and 3.5 in wide.
